tools lib traceevent: Fix time stamp rounding issue

When rounding to microseconds, if the timestamp subsecond is between
.999999500 and .999999999, it is rounded to .1000000, when it should
instead increment the second counter due to the overflow.

For example, if the timestamp is 1234.999999501 instead of seeing:

  1235.000000

we see:

  1234.1000000

The 'command_line' variable is free'd twice if db_export__branch_types()
fails. To avoid this, defer the free'ing of 'command_line' to after this
call so that the error return path will just free 'command_line' once.

Enable metrics printing in --per-core / --per-socket mode. We need to
save the shadow metrics in a unique place. Always use the first CPU in
the aggregation. Then use the same CPU to retrieve the shadow value
later.

perf stat: Implement CSV metrics output

Now support CSV output for metrics. With the new output callbacks this
is relatively straight forward by creating new callbacks.

This allows to easily plot metrics from CSV files.

The new line callback needs to know the number of fields to skip them
correctly

perf record: Ensure return non-zero rc when mmap fail

perf_evlist__mmap_ex() can fail without setting errno (for example, fail
in condition checking. In this case all syscall is success).

If this happen, record__open() incorrectly returns 0. Force setting rc
is a quick way to avoid this problem, or we have to follow all possible
code path in perf_evlist__mmap_ex() to make sure there's at least one
system call before returning an error.

After babeltrace commit 5cec03e402aa ("ir: copy variants and sequences
when setting a field path"), 'perf data convert' gets incorrect result
if there's bpf output data. For example:

The expected result of the first sample should be:

 raw_data = [ [0] = 0x2FE328C0, [1] = 0x15D81, [2] = 0x1 ] }

however, 'perf data convert' output big endian value to resuling CTF
file.

The reason is a internal change (or a bug?) of babeltrace.

Before this patch, at the first add_bpf_output_values(), byte order of
all integer type is uncertain (is 0, neither 1234 (le) nor 4321 (be)).
It would be fixed by:

perf_evlist__deliver_sample
 -> process_sample_event
   -> ctf_stream
      ...
      ->bt_ctf_trace_add_stream_class
        ->bt_ctf_field_type_structure_set_byte_order
          ->bt_ctf_field_type_integer_set_byte_order

during creating the stream.

However, the babeltrace commit mentioned above duplicates types in
sequence to prevent potential conflict in following call stack and link
the newly allocated type into the 'raw_data' sequence:

perf_evlist__deliver_sample
 -> process_sample_event
   -> ctf_stream
      ...
      -> bt_ctf_trace_add_stream_class
        -> bt_ctf_stream_class_resolve_types
           ...
           -> bt_ctf_field_type_sequence_copy
             ->bt_ctf_field_type_integer_copy

This happens before byte order setting, so only the newly allocated
type is initialized, the byte order of original type perf choose to
create the first raw_data is still uncertain.

Byte order in CTF output is not related to byte order in perf.data.
Setting it to anything other than BT_CTF_BYTE_ORDER_NATIVE solves this
problem (only BT_CTF_BYTE_ORDER_NATIVE needs to be fixed). To reduce
behavior changing, set byte order according to compiling options.

perf data: Support converting data from bpf_perf_event_output()

bpf_perf_event_output() outputs data through sample->raw_data. This
patch adds support to convert those data into CTF. A python script then
can be used to process output data from BPF programs.

Committer note:

Make sure you have python3-devel installed, not python-devel, which may
be for python2, which will lead to some "PyInstance_Type" errors. Also
make sure that you use the right libbabeltrace, because it is shipped
in Fedora, for instance, but an older version.

To build libbabeltrace's python binding one also needs to use:

 ./configure --enable-python-bindings

And then set PYTHONPATH=/usr/local/lib64/python3.4/site-packages/.

Only put the frontend/backend stalled cycles into the default perf stat
events when the CPU actually supports them.

This avoids empty columns with --metric-only on newer Intel CPUs.

perf tools: Fix locale handling in pmu parsing

Ingo reported regression on display format of big numbers, which is
missing separators (in default perf stat output).

 triton:~/tip> perf stat -a sleep 1
         ...
         127008602      cycles                    #    0.011 GHz
         279538533      stalled-cycles-frontend   #  220.09% frontend cycles idle
         119213269      instructions              #    0.94  insn per cycle

This is caused by recent change:

  perf stat: Check existence of frontend/backed stalled cycles

that added call to pmu_have_event, that subsequently calls
perf_pmu__parse_scale, which has a bug in locale handling.

The lc string returned from setlocale, that we use to store old locale
value, may be allocated in static storage. Getting a dynamic copy to
make it survive another setlocale call.

  $ perf stat ls
         ...
         2,360,602      cycles                    #    3.080 GHz
         2,703,090      instructions              #    1.15  insn per cycle
           546,031      branches                  #  712.511 M/sec

Committer note:

Since the patch introducing the regression didn't made to perf/core,
move it to just before where the regression was introduced, so that we
don't break bisection for this feature.

tools lib traceevent: Split pevent_print_event() into specific functionality functions

Currently there's a single function that is used to display a record's
data in human readable format. That's pevent_print_event().
Unfortunately, this gives little room for adding other output within the
line without updating that function call.

I've decided to split that function into 3 parts.

 pevent_print_event_task() which prints the task comm, pid and the CPU
 pevent_print_event_time() which outputs the record's timestamp
 pevent_print_event_data() which outputs the rest of the event data.

pevent_print_event() now simply calls these three functions.

To save time from doing the search for event from the record's type, I
created a new helper function called pevent_find_event_by_record(),
which returns the record's event, and this event has to be passed to the
above functions.

perf trace: Check and discard not only 'nr' but also '__syscall_nr'

Format fields of a syscall have the first variable '__syscall_nr' or
'nr' that mean the syscall number.  But it isn't relevant here so drop
it.

'nr' among fields of syscall was renamed '__syscall_nr'.  So add
exception handling to drop '__syscall_nr' and modify the comment for
this excpetion handling.

perf tools: Fix python extension build

The util/python-ext-sources file contains source files required to build
the python extension relative to $(srctree)/tools/perf,

Such a file path $(FILE).c is handed over to the python extension build
system, which builds the final object in the
$(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/$(FILE).o path.

After the build is done all files from $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)lib/ are
carried as the result binaries.

Above system fails when we add source file relative to ../lib, which we
do for:

  ../lib/bitmap.c
  ../lib/find_bit.c
  ../lib/hweight.c
  ../lib/rbtree.c

All above objects will be built like:

  $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/../lib/bitmap.c
  $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/../lib/find_bit.c
  $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/../lib/hweight.c
  $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/tmp/../lib/rbtree.c

which accidentally happens to be final library path:

  $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)/lib/

Changing setup.py to pass full paths of source files to Extension build
class and thus keep all built objects under $(PYTHON_EXTBUILD)tmp
directory.

RAPL is a per package facility and we already have a mechanism for a dedicated
per package reader. So there is no point to have multiple CPUs doing the
same. The current implementation actually starts two timers on two CPUs if one
does:

perf stat -C1,2 -e -e power/energy-pkg ....

which makes the whole concept of 1 reader per package moot.

What's worse is that the above returns the double of the actual energy
consumption, but that's a different problem to address and cannot be solved by
removing the pointless per cpuness of that mechanism.

Store the PMU pointer in event->pmu_private and use it instead of the per CPU
data. Preparatory step to get rid of the per CPU allocations. The usage sites
are the perf fast path, so we keep that even after the conversion to per
package storage as a CPU to package lookup involves 3 loads versus 1 with the
pmu_private pointer.

perf/x86/uncore: Track packages, not per CPU data

Uncore is a per package facility, but the code tries to mimick a per CPU
facility with completely convoluted constructs.

Simplify the whole machinery by tracking per package information. While at it,
avoid the kfree/alloc dance when a CPU goes offline and online again. There is
no point in freeing the box after it was allocated. We just keep proper
refcounting and the first CPU which comes online in a package does the
initialization/activation of the box.

x86/topology: Create logical package id

For per package oriented services we must be able to rely on the number of CPU
packages to be within bounds. Create a tracking facility, which

- calculates the number of possible packages depending on nr_cpu_ids after boot

- makes sure that the package id is within the number of possible packages. If
  the apic id is outside we map it to a logical package id if there is enough
  space available.

Provide interfaces for drivers to query the mapping and do translations from
physcial to logical ids.

Store the PMU pointer in event->pmu_private, so we can get rid of the

We keep it after converting to per package data, because a CPU to

For PMUs which are not per CPU, but e.g. per package/socket, we want to be
able to store a reference to the underlying per package/socket facility in the
event at init time so we can avoid magic storage constructs in the PMU driver.

This allows us to get rid of the per CPU dance in the intel uncore and RAPL
drivers and avoids a lookup of the per package data in the perf hotpath.

When tearing down the boxes nothing undoes the hardware state which was setup
by box->init_box(). Add a box->exit_box() callback and implement it for the
uncores which have an init_box() callback.

This misses the cleanup in the error exit pathes, but I cannot be bothered to
implement it before cleaning up the rest of the driver, which makes that task
way simpler.

This driver lacks any form of proper error handling. If initialization fails
or hotplug prepare fails, it lets the facility with half initialized stuff
around.

Fix the state and memory leaks in a first step. As a second step we need to
undo the hardware state which is set via uncore_box_init() on some of the
uncore implementations.

of dentry about to become positive, *then* checking its flags and
seeing that it's not negative anymore and using (already stale by

... into returning a positive to path_openat(), which would interpret that
as "symlink had been encountered" and proceed to corrupt memory, etc.
It can only happen due to a bug in some ->open() instance or in some LSM
hook, etc., so we report any such event *and* make sure it doesn't trick
us into further unpleasantness.

hpfs: don't truncate the file when delete fails

The delete opration can allocate additional space on the HPFS filesystem
due to btree split. The HPFS driver checks in advance if there is
available space, so that it won't corrupt the btree if we run out of space
during splitting.

If there is not enough available space, the HPFS driver attempted to
truncate the file, but this results in a deadlock since the commit
7dd29d8d865efdb00c0542a5d2c87af8c52ea6c7 ("HPFS: Introduce a global mutex
and lock it on every callback from VFS").

This patch removes the code that tries to truncate the file and -ENOSPC is
returned instead. If the user hits -ENOSPC on delete, he should try to
delete other files (that are stored in a leaf btree node), so that the
delete operation will make some space for deleting the file stored in
non-leaf btree node.

ext2, ext4: fix issue with missing journal entry in ext4_dax_mkwrite()

As it is currently written ext4_dax_mkwrite() assumes that the call into
__dax_mkwrite() will not have to do a block allocation so it doesn't create
a journal entry.  For a read that creates a zero page to cover a hole
followed by a write that actually allocates storage this is incorrect.  The
ext4_dax_mkwrite() -> __dax_mkwrite() -> __dax_fault() path calls
get_blocks() to allocate storage.

Fix this by having the ->page_mkwrite fault handler call ext4_dax_fault()
as this function already has all the logic needed to allocate a journal
entry and call __dax_fault().

Also update the ext2 fault handlers in this same way to remove duplicate
code and keep the logic between ext2 and ext4 the same.

Previously calls to dax_writeback_mapping_range() for all DAX filesystems
(ext2, ext4 & xfs) were centralized in filemap_write_and_wait_range().

dax_writeback_mapping_range() needs a struct block_device, and it used
to get that from inode->i_sb->s_bdev.  This is correct for normal inodes
mounted on ext2, ext4 and XFS filesystems, but is incorrect for DAX raw
block devices and for XFS real-time files.

Instead, call dax_writeback_mapping_range() directly from the filesystem
->writepages function so that it can supply us with a valid block
device.  This also fixes DAX code to properly flush caches in response
to sync(2).

dax_clear_blocks() needs a valid struct block_device and previously it
was using inode->i_sb->s_bdev in all cases.  This is correct for normal
inodes on mounted ext2, ext4 and XFS filesystems, but is incorrect for
DAX raw block devices and for XFS real-time devices.

Instead, rename dax_clear_blocks() to dax_clear_sectors(), and change
its arguments to take a bdev and a sector instead of an inode and a
block.  This better reflects what the function does, and it allows the
filesystem and raw block device code to pass in an appropriate struct
block_device.

Online defrag operations for ext4 are hard coded to use the page cache.
See ext4_ioctl() -> ext4_move_extents() -> move_extent_per_page()

When combined with DAX I/O, which circumvents the page cache, this can
result in data corruption.  This was observed with xfstests ext4/307 and
ext4/308.

Fix this by only allowing online defrag for non-DAX files.

ext2, ext4: only set S_DAX for regular inodes

When S_DAX is set on an inode we assume that if there are pages attached
to the mapping (mapping->nrpages != 0), those pages are clean zero pages
that were used to service reads from holes.  Any dirty data associated
with the inode should be in the form of DAX exceptional entries
(mapping->nrexceptional) that is written back via
dax_writeback_mapping_range().

With the current code, though, this isn't always true.  For example,
ext2 and ext4 directory inodes can have S_DAX set, but have their dirty
data stored as dirty page cache entries.  For these types of inodes,
having S_DAX set doesn't really make sense since their I/O doesn't
actually happen through the DAX code path.

Instead, only allow S_DAX to be set for regular inodes for ext2 and
ext4.  This allows us to have strict DAX vs non-DAX paths in the
writeback code.

When doing append direct io cleanup, if deleting inode fails, it goes
out without unlocking inode, which will cause the inode deadlock.

drivers: char: random: add get_random_long()

Commit d07e22597d1d ("mm: mmap: add new /proc tunable for mmap_base
ASLR") added the ability to choose from a range of values to use for
entropy count in generating the random offset to the mmap_base address.

The maximum value on this range was set to 32 bits for 64-bit x86
systems, but this value could be increased further, requiring more than
the 32 bits of randomness provided by get_random_int(), as is already
possible for arm64.  Add a new function: get_random_long() which more
naturally fits with the mmap usage of get_random_int() but operates
exactly the same as get_random_int().

Also, fix the shifting constant in mmap_rnd() to be an unsigned long so
that values greater than 31 bits generate an appropriate mask without
overflow.  This is especially important on x86, as its shift instruction
uses a 5-bit mask for the shift operand, which meant that any value for
mmap_rnd_bits over 31 acts as a no-op and effectively disables mmap_base
randomization.

Finally, replace calls to get_random_int() with get_random_long() where
appropriate.

mm: numa: quickly fail allocations for NUMA balancing on full nodes

Commit 4167e9b2cf10 ("mm: remove GFP_THISNODE") removed the GFP_THISNODE
flag combination due to confusing semantics.  It noted that
alloc_misplaced_dst_page() was one such user after changes made by
commit e97ca8e5b864 ("mm: fix GFP_THISNODE callers and clarify").

Unfortunately when GFP_THISNODE was removed, users of
alloc_misplaced_dst_page() started waking kswapd and entering direct
reclaim because the wrong GFP flags are cleared.  The consequence is
that workloads that used to fit into memory now get reclaimed which is
addressed by this patch.

The problem can be demonstrated with "mutilate" that exercises memcached
which is software dedicated to memory object caching.  The configuration
uses 80% of memory and is run 3 times for varying numbers of clients.
The results on a 4-socket NUMA box are

The vanilla kernel is swapping like crazy with large amounts of direct
reclaim and kswapd activity.  The figures are aggregate but it's known
that the bad activity is throughout the entire test.

Note that simple streaming anon/file memory consumers also see this
problem but it's not as obvious.  In those cases, kswapd is awake when
it should not be.

As there are at least two reclaim-related bugs out there, it's worth
spelling out the user-visible impact.  This patch only addresses bugs
related to excessive reclaim on NUMA hardware when the working set is
larger than a NUMA node.  There is a bug related to high kswapd CPU
usage but the reports are against laptops and other UMA hardware and is
not addressed by this patch.

pmd_trans_unstable()/pmd_none_or_trans_huge_or_clear_bad() were
introduced to locklessy (but atomically) detect when a pmd is a regular
(stable) pmd or when the pmd is unstable and can infinitely transition
from pmd_none() and pmd_trans_huge() from under us, while only holding
the mmap_sem for reading (for writing not).

While holding the mmap_sem only for reading, MADV_DONTNEED can run from
under us and so before we can assume the pmd to be a regular stable pmd
we need to compare it against pmd_none() and pmd_trans_huge() in an
atomic way, with pmd_trans_unstable().  The old pmd_trans_huge() left a
tiny window for a race.

Useful applications are unlikely to notice the difference as doing
MADV_DONTNEED concurrently with a page fault would lead to undefined
behavior.

This driver uses PCI glue that is only available on 32-bit ARM.  This used
to work fine as long as ARCH_MVEBU and ARCH_DOVE were exclusively 32-bit,
but there's a patch in the pipe to make ARCH_MVEBU also available on 64-bit
ARM.

991de2e59090 ("PCI, x86: Implement pcibios_alloc_irq() and
pcibios_free_irq()") appeared in v4.3 and helps support IOAPIC hotplug.

Олег reported that the Elcus-1553 TA1-PCI driver worked in v4.2 but not
v4.3 and bisected it to 991de2e59090.  Sunjin reported that the RocketRAID
272x driver worked in v4.2 but not v4.3.  In both cases booting with
"pci=routirq" is a workaround.

I think the problem is that after 991de2e59090, we no longer call
pcibios_enable_irq() for upstream bridges.  Prior to 991de2e59090, when a
driver called pci_enable_device(), we recursively called
pcibios_enable_irq() for upstream bridges via pci_enable_bridge().

After 991de2e59090, we call pcibios_enable_irq() from pci_device_probe()
instead of the pci_enable_device() path, which does *not* call
pcibios_enable_irq() for upstream bridges.

Revert 991de2e59090 to fix these driver regressions.

perf config: Bring perf_default_config to the very beginning at main()

Before this patch each subcommand calls perf_config() by themself,
reading the default configuration together with subcommand specific
options. If a subcommand doesn't have it own options, it needs to call
'perf_config(perf_default_config, NULL)' to ensure .perfconfig is
loaded.

This patch brings perf_config(perf_default_config, NULL) to the very
start of main(), so subcommands don't need to do it.

After this patch, 'llvm.clang-path' works for 'perf trace'.

The column width of dynamic entries is updated when comparing hist
entries.  However some unique entries can miss the chance to update.  So
move the update to output resort stage to make sure every entry will get
called before display.

To do that, abuse ->sort callback to update the width when the third
argument is NULL.  When resorting entries in normal path, it never be
NULL so it should be fine IMHO.

When dynamic sort key is used it might not show pretty printed output.
This is because the trace output was not set only for the first dynamic
sort key.  During hierarchy_insert_entry() it missed to pass the

but it's not guaranteed.

The dynamic entries are right-aligned unlike other entries since it
usually has numeric value.  But for the hierarchy mode, left alignment
is more appropriate IMHO.  Also trim spaces on the left so that we can
easily identify the hierarchy.

perf report: Fix indentation of dynamic entries in hierarchy

When dynamic entries are used in the hierarchy mode with multiple
events, the output might not be aligned properly.  In the hierarchy
mode, the each sort column is indented using total number of sort keys.
So it keeps track of number of sort keys when adding them.  However
a dynamic sort key can be added more than once when multiple events have
same field names.  This results in unnecessarily long indentation in the
output.

For example perf kmem records following events:

  $ perf evlist --trace-fields -i perf.data.kmem

  kmem:kmem_cache_free: trace_fields: call_site,ptr
  kmem:mm_page_alloc: trace_fields: page,order,gfp_flags,migratetype

As you can see, many field names shared between kmem events.  So adding
'ptr' dynamic sort key alone will set nr_sort_keys to 6.  And this adds
many unnecessary spaces between columns.

In the unlikely event that regno == nr_registers then we get an array
overrun on regoff because the invalid register check is currently
off-by-one. Fix this with a check that regno is >= nr_registers instead.

Detected with static analysis using CoverityScan.

When the hierarchy mode is used, some entries might be omiited due to a
percent limit or filter.  In this case the output hierarchy is different
than other entries.  Add an informative message to users about this.

For example, when 4% of percent limit is applied:

The hists__overhead_width() is to calculate width occupied by the
overhead (and others) columns before the sort columns.

The hist_entry__has_hiearchy_children() is to check whether an entry has
lower entries (children) in the hierarchy to be shown in the output.
This means the children should not be filtered out and above the percent
limit.

These two functions will be used to show information when all children
of an entry is omitted by the percent limit (or filter).

Currently the interrupt handler of HD-audio driver assumes that no irq
update is needed while processing the irq.  But in reality, it has
been confirmed that the HW irq is issued even during the irq
handling.  Since we clear the irq status at the beginning, process the
interrupt, then exits from the handler, the lately issued interrupt is
left untouched without being properly processed.

This patch changes the interrupt handler code to loop over the
check-and-process.  The handler tries repeatedly as long as the IRQ
status are turned on, and either stream or CORB/RIRB is handled.

For checking the stream handling, snd_hdac_bus_handle_stream_irq()
returns a value indicating the stream indices bits.  Other than that,
the change is only in the irq handler itself.

  When perf added a "reg" function to the function tracing event (not a
  tracepoint), it caused that event to be displayed as a tracepoint and
  could cause errors in tracepoint handling.  That was solved by adding
  a flag to ignore ftrace non-tracepoint events.  But that flag was
  missed when displaying events in available_events, which should only
  contain tracepoint events.

  This broke a documented way to enable all events with:

      cat available_events > set_event

  As the function non-tracepoint event would cause that to error out.
  The commit here fixes that by having the available_events file not
  list events that have the ignore flag set"
