Merge tag 'perf-core-for-mingo' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/acme/linux into perf/core
Pull perf/core improvements and fixes from Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo:
User visible changes:
- Callchain improvements from Andi Kleen including:
* Enable printing the srcline in the history
* Make get_srcline fall back to sym+offset
- Allow to force redirect pr_debug to stderr. (Andi Kleen)
- TUI hist_entry browser fixes, including showing missing overhead
value for first level callchain. Detected comparing the output of
--stdio/--gui (that matched) with --tui, that had this problem. (Namhyung Kim)
- Fix segfault due to invalid kernel dso access (Namhyung Kim)
Infrastructure changes:
- Move bfd_demangle stubbing to its only user (Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo)
- 'perf stat' refactorings, moving stuff from it to evsel.c to use in
per-pkg/snapshot format changes (Jiri Olsa)
- Add per-pkg format file parsing (Matt Fleming)

perf symbols: Move bfd_demangle stubbing to its only user
We need to define bfd_demangle() to either a wrapper for
cplus_demangle() or to a stub when NO_DEMANGLE is defined.
That is at odds with using bfd.h for some other reason, as it defines
bfd_demangle() and then if code that wants to use symbol.h, where the
above stubbing/wrapping is done, and bfd.h for other reasons, we end up
with a build error where bfd_demangle() is found to be redefined.
Avoid that by moving the stubbing/wrapping to symbol-elf.c, that is the
only user of such function. If we ever get to a point where there are
more valid users, we can then introduce a header for that.

perf callchain: Enable printing the srcline in the history
For lbr-as-callgraph we need to see the line number in the history,
because many LBR entries can be in a single function, and just
showing the same function name many times is not useful.
When the history code is configured to sort by address, also try to
resolve the address to a file:srcline and display this in the browser.
If that doesn't work still display the address.
This can be also useful without LBRs for understanding which call in a large
function (or in which inlined function) called something else.

Events may still be ordered even if there are no timestamps e.g. if the

Also synthesized COMM events have a timestamp of zero.
Consequently it is better to keep comm entries even if they have a
timestamp of zero.
However, when a struct thread is created the command string is not known
and a comm entry with a string of the form ":<tid>" is used.
In that case thread->comm_set is false and the comm entry should be

perf annotate: Support source line numbers in annotate
With srcline key/sort'ing it's useful to have line numbers in the

Use objdump -l to request the line numbers and save them in the line
structure. Then the browser displays them for source lines.
The line numbers are not displayed by default, but can be toggled on
with 'k'
There is one unfortunate problem with this setup. For lines not
containing source and which are outside functions objdump -l reports
line numbers off by a few: it always reports the first line number in
the next function even for lines that are outside the function.
I haven't found a nice way to detect/correct this. Probably objdump has
to be fixed.
See https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=16433

perf: Fix corruption of sibling list with hotplug
When a CPU hotplugged out, we call perf_remove_from_context() (via
perf_event_exit_cpu()) to rip each CPU-bound event out of its PMU's cpu
context, but leave siblings grouped together. Freeing of these events is
left to the mercy of the usual refcounting.
When a CPU-bound event's refcount drops to zero we cross-call to
__perf_remove_from_context() to clean it up, detaching grouped siblings.
This works when the relevant CPU is online, but will fail if the CPU is
currently offline, and we won't detach the event from its siblings
before freeing the event, leaving the sibling list corrupt. If the
sibling list is later walked (e.g. because the CPU cam online again
before a remaining sibling's refcount drops to zero), we will walk the
now corrupted siblings list, potentially dereferencing garbage values.
Given that the events should never be scheduled again (as we removed
them from their context), we can simply detatch siblings when the CPU
goes down in the first place. If the CPU comes back online, the
redundant call to __perf_remove_from_context() is safe.

perf tools: Fix build-id matching on vmlinux
There's a problem on finding correct kernel symbols when perf report
runs on a different kernel. Although a part of the problem was solved
by the prior commit
0a7e6d1b6844 ("perf tools: Check recorded kernel
version when finding vmlinux"), there's a remaining problem still.
When perf records samples, it synthesizes the kernel map using
machine__mmap_name() and ref_reloc_sym like "[kernel.kallsyms]_text".
You can easily see it using 'perf report -D' command.
After finishing record, it goes through the recorded events to find
maps/dsos actually used. And then record build-id info of them.
During this process, it needs to load symbols in a dso and it'd call
dso__load_vmlinux_path() since the default value of the symbol_conf.
try_vmlinux_path is true. However it changes dso->long_name to a real
path of the vmlinux file (e.g. /lib/modules/3.16.4/build/vmlinux) if one
is running on a custom kernel.
It resulted in that perf report reads the build-id of the vmlinux, but
cannot use it since it only knows about the [kernel.kallsyms] map. It
then falls back to possible vmlinux paths by using the recorded kernel
version (in case of a recent version) or a running kernel silently.
Even with the recent tools, this still has a possibility of breaking
the result. As the build directory is a symbolic link, if one built a
new kernel in the same directory with different source/config, the old
link to vmlinux will point the new file. So it's absolutely needed to
use build-id when finding a kernel image.
In this patch, it's now changed to try to search a kernel dso in the
existing dso list which was constructed during build-id table parsing
so it'll always have a build-id. If not found, search "[kernel.kallsyms]".

perf record: Do not save pathname in ./debug/.build-id directory for vmlinux
When perf record finishes a session, it pre-processes samples in order
to write build-id info from DSOs that had samples.
During this process it'll call map__load() for the kernel map, and it
ends up calling dso__load_vmlinux_path() which replaces dso->long_name.
But this function checks kernel's build-id before searching vmlinux path
so it'll end up with a cryptic name, the pathname for the entry in the
~/.debug cache, which can be confusing to users.
This patch adds a flag to skip the build-id check during record, so
that it'll have the original vmlinux path for the kernel dso->long_name,
not the entry in the ~/.debug cache.

Enhance the thread stack to output detailed information about paired

While the call-back makes it possible for the facility to be used by
arbitrary tools, a subsequent patch will provide the information to
Python scripting via the db-export interface.
An important part of the call/return information is the
call path which provides a structure that defines a context
sensitive call graph.
Note that there are now two ways to use the thread stack.
For simply providing a call stack (like you would get from the perf

thread_stack__sample().

framework, we omitted proper listing of the SPI device IDs. This
means m25p80.c wouldn't auto-load (modprobe) properly when built as
a module. For now, we duplicate the device IDs into both modules.
- The OMAP / ELM modules were depending on an implicit link ordering.
Use deferred probing so that the new link order (in 3.18-rc) can
still allow for successful probing.

Few fixes for omaps to enable NAND BCH so devices won't
produce errors when booted with omap2plus_defconfig, and
reduce bloat by making IPV6 a loadable module.
Also let's add a warning about legacy boot being deprecated
for omap3.
We now have things working with device tree, and only omap3 is
still booting in legacy mode. So hopefully this warning will
help move the remaining legacy mode users to boot with device
tree.
As the total reduction of code and static data is somewhere
around 20000 lines of code once we remove omap3 legacy mode
booting, we really do want to make omap3 to boot also in
device tree mode only over the next few merge cycles.

KVM: nVMX: Disable preemption while reading from shadow VMCS
In order to access the shadow VMCS, we need to load it. At this point,
vmx->loaded_vmcs->vmcs and the actually loaded one start to differ. If
we now get preempted by Linux, vmx_vcpu_put and, on return, the
vmx_vcpu_load will work against the wrong vmcs. That can cause
copy_shadow_to_vmcs12 to corrupt the vmcs12 state.
Fix the issue by disabling preemption during the copy operation.
copy_vmcs12_to_shadow is safe from this issue as it is executed by
vmx_vcpu_run when preemption is already disabled before vmentry.
This bug is exposed by running Jailhouse within KVM on CPUs with
shadow VMCS support. Jailhouse never expects an interrupt pending
vmexit, but the bug can cause it if, after copy_shadow_to_vmcs12
is preempted, the active VMCS happens to have the virtual interrupt
pending flag set in the CPU-based execution controls.

jumps") introduced a bug that caused the fix to be incomplete. Due to
incorrect evaluation, far jump to segment with L bit cleared (i.e., 32-bit
segment) and RIP with any of the high bits set (i.e, RIP[63:32] != 0) set may
not trigger #GP. As we know, this imposes a security problem.
In addition, the condition for two warnings was incorrect.

A critical 3.18 regression fix from Rob, (thanks!)
A fix to avoid advertizing modes we can't support from Sinclair
(welcome Sinclair!)
and a fix for an incorrect hash key computation from me that is
completely harmless, but can wait 'til the next merge window if necessary.

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.18-rc3' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull ACPI and power management fixes from Rafael Wysocki:
"These are fixes received after my previous pull request plus one that
has been in the works for quite a while, but its previous version
caused problems to happen, so it's been deferred till now.
Fixed are two recent regressions (MFD enumeration and cpufreq-dt),
ACPI EC regression introduced in 3.17, system suspend error code path
regression introduced in 3.15, an older bug related to recovery from
failing resume from hibernation and a cpufreq-dt driver issue related
to operation performance points.
Specifics:
- Fix a crash on r8a7791/koelsch during resume from system suspend
caused by a recent cpufreq-dt commit (Geert Uytterhoeven).
- Fix an MFD enumeration problem introduced by a recent commit adding
ACPI support to the MFD subsystem that exposed a weakness in the
ACPI core causing ACPI enumeration to be applied to all devices
associated with one ACPI companion object, although it should be
used for one of them only (Mika Westerberg).
- Fix an ACPI EC regression introduced during the 3.17 cycle causing
some Samsung laptops to misbehave as a result of a workaround
targeted at some Acer machines. That includes a revert of a commit
that went too far and a quirk for the Acer machines in question.
From Lv Zheng.
- Fix a regression in the system suspend error code path introduced
during the 3.15 cycle that causes it to fail to take errors from
asychronous execution of "late" suspend callbacks into account
(Imre Deak).
- Fix a long-standing bug in the hibernation resume error code path
that fails to roll back everything correcty on "freeze" callback
errors and leaves some devices in a "suspended" state causing more
breakage to happen subsequently (Imre Deak).
- Make the cpufreq-dt driver disable operation performance points
that are not supported by the VR connected to the CPU voltage plane
with acceptable tolerance instead of constantly failing voltage
scaling later on (Lucas Stach)"

An unintentional sysfs filename change in commit
5136b2da770d
("PCI: convert bus code to use dev_groups"), which appeared in
v3.13, changed "enable" to "enabled", and this changes it back.
Old users of "enable" are currently broken and will be helped by
this change. Anything that started to use "enabled" after v3.13
will be broken by this change. If necessary, we can add a symlink
to make both work, but this patch doesn't do that.
PCI device hotplug
- Revert duplicate merge (Kamal Mostafa)
A mistaken duplicate merge that added a check twice. Nothing's
broken; this just removes the unnecessary code.

x86_64, entry: Fix out of bounds read on sysenter
Rusty noticed a Really Bad Bug (tm) in my NT fix. The entry code
reads out of bounds, causing the NT fix to be unreliable. But, and
this is much, much worse, if your stack is somehow just below the
top of the direct map (or a hole), you read out of bounds and crash.
Excerpt from the crash:
[ 1.129513] RSP: 0018:
ffff88001da4bf88 EFLAGS:
00010296
2b:* f7 84 24 90 00 00 00 testl $0x4000,0x90(%rsp)
That read is deterministically above the top of the stack. I
thought I even single-stepped through this code when I wrote it to
check the offset, but I clearly screwed it up.
